Shahla Garayeva Scholarship Program (SGSP) is designed to help young girls-students from Azerbaijan get funds for their education. If you apply and pass the selection process successfully, university fees (up to 800 US Dollars) will be covered by SGSP funds during one academic year duration.

Eligibility Requirements

Identity

Be an Azerbaijani or an Azerbaijani citizen;

Background

Be a young girl from underrepresented background(s) (e.g. low-income family, single-parent household, rural residence, ethnic minority, residents of remote areas, people with disabilities families affected by the Karabakh war etc.).

Motivation

Be an applicant or a student in any educational institution in Azerbaijan; have a demonstrated need for covering educational expenses at a tertiary level of education within Azerbaijan.

Note: Applicants currently enrolled in high school can also apply for the scholarship program.

Selection Process

The recipient(s) of the SGSP will be selected by the board that will be established as a result of the crowdfunding campaign and will also include the SGSP team. The selection will take place in three stages:

1) Submission of application forms and initial shortlisting;
2) Review of shortlisted applications by supporters;
3) Face-to-face or phone interviews.

Upon selection, we will award one-time scholarships in the amount of $700 (paid directly to educational institutions) towards the educational expenses of the finalists.
By expanding girls’ access to educational opportunities, we will be able to open up doors to future careers, and financial stability in the same way Shahla helped her students.

1. What is SGSP?

Named after the late Dr. Shahla Garayeva (1962-2018), the Shahla Garayeva Scholarship Program (SGSP) is a memorial crowdfunding campaign that supports educational aspirations of Azerbaijani women from disadvantaged backgrounds.

2. Why is this program named after Shahla Garayeva?

Born in Ashaghi Seyidahmadli village, Fuzuli, Dr. Shahla Garayeva has spent decades working as a teacher, advancing from a language teacher role at her village school to a professor of English and American Literature at Baku State University. Shahla has educated hundreds of students who have gone on to lead successful careers.

3. How does the SGSP get funded?

The SGSP is completely financed through crowdfunding campaign that goes towards covering tuition fees of the recipients, bank transfer fees, and other miscellaneous costs.

4. Who is eligible to receive the SGSP awards?

The SGSP is a needs-based scholarship program. Female students planning to enroll/enrolled at an accredited higher education institution in Azerbaijan who have a demonstrated need to cover their tuition fees are eligible to apply.

5. What is the selection process like?

We select the SGSP awardees through an open call for applications that follows the crowdfunding campaign. There are three stages of selection: 1) completed application form; 2) external review by the supporters; 3) phone/Skype/face-to-face interviews

6. How does the SGSP transfer the awards to scholarship recipients?

The awards are transferred directly to the recipient’s college/university. The SGSP does not transfer cash awards to the recipients.

7. How does the SGSP ensure transparency?

We raised funds for the SGSP through crowdfunding campaigns on the StartSomeGood platform. We report all of our revenues, expenses, and program-related activities in our Annual Report available on our website.

8. What does the SGSP entail other than the financial support?

In addition to scholarships, together with our partners, we are also providing training sessions on gender equality and women’s empowerment for the recipients. We also have a group of mentors assigned to each recipient who work with them to plan their careers.
